Anya Fisher

An artist bound by line, bent into shape, soaked into expending volume of color, considers himself a free man.
--Anya Fisher

Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery is pleased to present Anya Fisher, its’ fifth exhibition of oil paintings by the artist which combine Fisher’s ideas of mysticism and feminism that create a unique visual language through her distinctive use of line, color and volume.

Born in Odessa, Russia in 1905 to an affluent family, Anya Fisher demonstrated her first artistic gifts as a pianist when she was just five years old. Shortly after the Bolsheviks killed her father in 1917, her mother fled with this gifted artist and her two sisters to America. After a short career with the Minneapolis Symphony and a brief marriage, she moved to San Francisco and met the love of her life, Eddie Fisher. The two married and made their way to Los Angeles, where she painted and worked at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to fund two years of study at the Academie Frand Chaumiere in Paris. When she returned, she enrolled in classes with Rico Lebrun at the Jepson Art Institute.

Fisher’s aesthetics unite West Coast Modernism with references to Russian Orthodox icons that create her distinct style. Fisher’s figurative work concentrates exclusively on women, whom radiate the polarities of power and tenderness. The woman is no longer a mere object, but stands as an incarnation of the sublime creative force. Girl in Dark Dress Seated in Orange shows how Anya portrays women in strong abstracted forms against a field of Hard Edge inspired color. Anya’s still lifes and landscapes are fashioned much like her figurative work because they defy convention and invoke the metaphysical.

Fisher’s works are held in select public collections such as the Pasadena Art Museum, Long Beach Museum of Art, LACMA, and National Museum of Women in the Arts. Anya Fisher has a long history of exhibitions starting as early as 1947 at The Esther Robles Gallery, in Los Angeles. The latest exhibition featured at Sullivan Goss – An American Gallery presents a selection of paintings that provide a rich experience for the visual senses.
